etsy spotlight: yumyumbuttons

I love the fabric-covered buttons turned into thumbtacks and magnets from yumyumbuttons on Etsy. They’re super cute, and I’m having a hard time resisting the kitty ones!

Aren’t they adorable? Unfortunately they’re not all currently in stock, but hopefully more of them will be up soon!

maneki neko monday: please help japan

This Maneki Neko Monday is dedicated to Japan, home of the maneki neko, and to all the people and animals affected by the earthquake.

These maneki neko statues were knocked down and broken by the earthquake. Though these certainly aren’t the most tragic photos of the destruction, it’s still a sad sight to see.

Please keep Japan in your thoughts, and if possible, please consider making some donations. Below are some organizations that help with animal rescue, and they are all accepting donations.

WorldVets is a non-government organization (NGO) that provides veterinary aid around the globe. They are coordinating their efforts with a coalition of animal rescue groups in Japan and are accepting donations to help them aid the animals affected by this disaster.

American Humane Association is accepting donations for a relief fund they’ve set up to help animal victims of this tragedy.

Animal Refuge Kansai is accepting donations to assist with the huge influx of animals that they are expecting.

Japan Earthquake Animal Rescue and Support is a coalition of three groups—HEART-Tokushima, Animal Garden Niigata and Japan Cat Network—who have combined forces to focus information, rescue and support for animals in crisis due to the March 11 disasters.

The Animal Miracle Foundation & Network is collecting cellphones to send to volunteers helping animals in Japan.

The Search Dog Foundation is sending over Canine Disaster Search Teams so they can put their skills to use in finding people (and hopefully animals!) buried and trapped under rubble.

Artist Bernadette Kazmarski will donate proceeds from sales of her t-shirts and framed block prints of her beautiful torties to Animal Refuge Kansai. Please read her blog for more details.

Felis Ristorante and Cat Lounge is a cat cafe that was not harmed during the earthquake but is suffering from the aftereffects. Because they aren’t getting many customers, they are not making any money and may have to close their doors. Please consider making a donation, even a small one, so that the 30 cats that live there don’t lose their home.

Thanks to The Conscious Cat and ModernCat for finding these organizations and opportunities to help. I will update this post if I find more ways to help. If you hear anything, please let us know!

maneki neko monday

I have a slight obsession with maneki neko. So why not have a day dedicated to them? I plan on writing up a detailed post about maneki neko in the near future, since a lot of people aren’t familiar with them and I think they’re pretty awesome.

Here’s a traditional maneki neko with both a coin and a daruma.
