friday’s featured feline: mini

Hey there, everyone! We have quite a few featured felines lined up, so get ready to make some new feline friends! This week we’re meeting Mini, a spastic Tabby who, according to his human, Shalini, loves “digging to China”! (My cats totally do this, too—do yours?)

mini

Where/how/when did you got your cat? In RVT school, a class mate brought in her foster kittens to be looked at. This one particular tabby caught my eye, he was very sickly, and cuddly and slept in my cleavage all day! SOLD! I got him on my birthday that year, the same day my mom left to be out of the country. 6 months later, she came back and asked who’s cat this was :)

mini

What’s the inspiration behind your cat’s name? Initially an ex named him Jack Nicholson, but I nicknamed him Mini and it stuck :)

How old is your cat? 3 glorious years!

What breed is your cat? Tabby with awesome markings, and spots on his tummy in the shape of a smiley face!

What are their habits, likes, dislikes? He literally is a spaz. My friends swear I give him drugs. He is hilarious, he tries to dig to China in the bottom of crystal bowls, likes to sleep looking like he got ran over, has pica so he chews on EVERYTHING… including our really expensive plantation shutters!

mini

How about favorite toys, foods, places to sleep, hobbies? Plastic milk bottle caps, aluminum foil, my feet, his weird green catnip toy. Loves to sleep on my mom’s bed (even though she hates it), under the couch, on my butt. His favorite past time is terrorizing my older Siamese. They’ve lived together for 3 years and he still swears she wants to be friends. She SO doesn’t.

friday’s featured feline: olive

It’s been a while since we’ve done one of these (that means we need submissions!), and since Black Cat Appreciation Day was on Wednesday, I’m going to feature one of my past kitties, Olive, who was a wonderful little thing and deserves a post all of her own.

Olive

Olive came into my life back in the winter of 2006, along with her siblings Kudzu and Juniper. They were little kittens then, and though I only wanted two kittens, I ended up with all three because I couldn’t leave one.

Baby Olive

I’m not going to lie—Olive was kind of my favorite out of the three. I know you shouldn’t have favorites when it comes to your ‘children,’ but she was just the most amazing little sweetheart. She loved everyone, and everyone loved her. She was super friendly, and whenever I’d host a get together with my college friends, she was always up in everyone’s faces.

I don’t really remember it, but looking back through my pictures, it seems that she and Juniper were great buds.

Baby Olive and June

Olive and Juniper

I had Olive for less than a year before she was taken away from me by the horrible disease known as feline leukemia. Right before school started back, my boyfriend and I spent a week up north on vacation. When we came back, Olive was acting funny. She was very lethargic, and not herself at all. She would hide under the bed, and didn’t seem to be eating or drinking.

Panicked, I took her to the vet. I seem to recall that with her first test for FeLV, she came out negative. But then the more accurate test came back, and turns out she was positive. She was declining quickly. The only thing we could do to help was to give her some steroids and a blood transfusion. Because I couldn’t decide which sibling should be the donor, I took in both Kudzu and Juniper.

The next day, I brought home all three (mildly irritated) kitties, and Olive was back to her normal self. But then, only days later, she started declining again. I was distraught. I spoke with my vet, and he said that I could get more testing done at the UT Vet Hospital. The only catch was that it would cost a thousand dollars, maybe more, and it would guarantee nothing. Even if they could save her, it would probably only extend her life for another month or two.

This was probably the hardest decision of my life so far. I was a college student, so I definitely did not have the money. I had already spent quite a lot on the testing and transfusion. According to the vet, she would start having seizures and other complications due to not eating or drinking.

I decided to put her down, because I couldn’t bear to see her suffer. I thought that even if I could keep her alive for a few more months, those months would not be pleasant for her. Being tested on and stuck in a cage all the time is not a happy life. I believe that keeping her alive would have been for purely selfish reasons.

You might disagree, and I can understand why. But I do feel like I made the right choice. My mother claims to be a cat lover, yet she has never had a cat put to sleep and so growing up I’ve seen a lot of suffering. I couldn’t bear to put my sweet Olive through that.

Sweet Olive

Rest in peace, Olive. I wish you were still with me and your brother and sister today.

friday’s featured feline: jax and violet-mae

Today we’re going to meet Brenda’s two sweet kitties, Jax and Violet-Mae!

jax

Jax is a sweet kitty we adopted when he was a stray on our property. At first we thought he was feral, but after catching him it was apparent he was once a pet. Jax loves to sunbathe when he’s not following us around the house and playing with his “little sister” Violet-Mae, another adoptee kitty.

violet-mae

Violet-Mae was a feral kitty that we captured on our property. Her ear had been “clipped” as a sign she’d been captured, spayed and then released. Fortunately, she was lovingly accepted by our newly adopted cat Jax.

friday’s featured feline: claire

I’m writing for my good buddy Ledford, who’s graciously provided some photos (and a cute video!) of the gorgeous Claire for today’s Featured Feline!

Claire is quite a diva, always ready for her closeup!

Here’s a photo of Claire and me from when I last got to visit her and Ledford in Knoxville. She’s one of my favorite kitty friends!

Like many cats, Claire gets an abundance of toys, and instead likes to play with cardboard:

Gotta love a silly kitty-face:

Claire is also an expert in cat-tortion:

One of the funniest things Claire does is to try and go through the looking glass to play with the cat on the other side. She demands Ledford let her through!

friday’s featured feline: echo

Gina sent in an oil painting of her cat, Echo, that she wanted to show off. I asked her to send in more pictures and a bit of info so we could feature Echo as our Featured Feline this week. Check out this fabulous tuxedo cat!

echo

Echo is a tuxedo cat. She is 13 years old now. My brother saved her when she was just a kitten. He saw her stranded on part of a bridge on the high speed lane of a highway. He brought her to me cause I had just lost a cat to coyotes. She is very happy to be an indoor kitty which she has been all these years.

Here is an oil painting I did of her in 2007.

You can see how obviously regal & above it all she is! She is quite the character—as all cats are.

friday’s featured feline: josephine ramone & stevie nicks

Welcome to this week’s Featured Feline! We’re going to let Christina take the stage to introduce her two rock star kitties!

Hello, I would like to submit for your viewing pleasure: Miss Josephine Ramone, and Stevie Nicks!

Miss Josephine Ramone was a rescue from the MSPCA in 2002. She was a street cat, who was at the shelter for several months with lacerations under her front legs. Since the day we met, it was love at first sight. She has been loyal and a super snuggle bug, often hogging half the bed, and making camp on my lap, preventing me from doing work. She always greets me at the door. She also makes an excellent alarm: with her head butts, paws on the neck and eventually, batting things to the floor, she gets my lazy butt out of bed.

Stevie Nicks was another rescue. I was hesitant of getting a second cat, but was told if she didn’t get a home by the next day, her owners would throw her on the street! I just couldn’t let this one go! Without meeting her, I agreed to take her in, a decision I will never regret. She became part of the family in 2008, and at first, I didn’t think it would work out. She would hide and hiss, and Joey would tend to pick on her. But within months, we started to get along, and now we are inseperable. She has proven to be another snuggle bug, and although she is less than half the size of Joey, between them, there is not much room for me on the bed! She has also proven to be quite feisty. She likes to spar, with little nips and playful bats of the paws.

They are both American shorthairs, and named after my two favorite musicians. They both like to snuggle. Joey is the laziest of the two, but every now and then I will see her chasing Stevie about the house. Stevie enjoys sparring and chasing the laser pointer. Both are big on cat nip toys, and both are accomplished mousers! Stevie is fascinated by water and often accompanies me on the edge of the tub when I shower. Joey, on the other hand, dislikes the sound of the shower, and usually scampers off.

lap cats
Whenever Stevie manages to get on my lap, Joey always has to join. Before she would bully Stevie away, but over the years she has learned the value of sharing.

joey loves shoes
Joey seems to like my shoes. I will find her sitting by herself, just chilling in my shoes. Especially just before I need them to leave the house.

lobstercat!
Like any proud mama, I like to dress up my cats for my amusement. Stevie, although she likes to humor me, fails to see the fun in any of this.

cash cat
I am a waitress and I come home with stacks of singles. Here Joey is keeping guard of it. Or too lazy to get up and steal it.

queens of the castle
Not only do they get free reign of my bed and lap, my little princesses get their very own castle!

snugglebug
Stevie likes to burrow under the covers right next to me, and sometimes I will awake in the morning to see this little darling.

sleepy time
Joey also likes to burrow under the covers, but mostly just to explore. Mostly, she is sprawled out next to me, every night.
