friday’s featured feline: apple
It’s been much too long since we’ve had a Featured Feline post! You know you want to show off your kitties, and you know they want their 15 minutes of fame, so be sure to send us your submission!
Today we’re going to meet Apple, who became a great friend and companion to owner James in a time of loneliness. Take it away, James!
Allow me to introduce Apple, the medium-haired cat whose motivation to do absolutely nothing as often as possible could actually serve as a source of alternative energy if only it could be harnessed.

When I first adopted Apple from the local shelter, she was only three months old. My girlfriend at the time suggested I adopt a pet because I was living alone and often times found myself to be depressed and lonely. Because I worked third shift and had to work long hours on occasion, a cat was the ideal candidate for a pet, and thus I adopted Apple (that was the name given to her by the folks at the shelter; it just seemed to fit her, so I didn’t bother changing it).

Apple is typically a very somber cat, and she is extremely quiet. When she was younger, she talked quite a bit, but as she aged she mellowed out considerably. She is now approximately two and a half years old, and spends most of her time within five feet of the heater in my new flat.

Although Apple is quiet and doesn’t enjoy play time very much, she is an extremely affectionate cat. More often than not, I am woken up each morning to the feeling of her silly cat tongue licking my feet or my hands. Whenever I am home, she makes it a point to follow me from room to room and purr like a freight train (unless, of course, the heater is looking particularly inviting that day).

After spending two years with this cat, I have to say that my girlfriend’s suggestion turned out to be absolutely brilliant; Apple has kept me company and lifted my spirits when no humans were around to do so. It has been a true joy owning her, and I look forward to many healthy years for both of us in the future.

friday’s featured feline: bosco
This week’s featured feline is Bosco. Look at that handsome face! His human Sarah is going to tell us his story.

I’ve been a cat lover and owner all my life, but 6 years ago when my dog Max died and after a few year long stint without a cat I knew it was time to get another. When my friend told me a family friend’s cat had just had kittens I was put on a six week waiting list. A six week waiting list that seemed to drag on forever!
Finally though, when it was time, I went to pick out my new moggy. There were 2 little kittens sitting together on a couch when I arrived, and a long haired one in the clothes basket who got carried out to me. He was the one!

Even though I had had six weeks to choose the perfect name, I still didn’t have one the night before so I started looking through old CDs and looking at the songs on the back. When I came across a song by my favourite Aussie band called ‘Hey Bosco’ I thought it would be perfect for my new little boy. Slighly unusual but cute at the same time. It turned out to suit my slightly unusual but cute kitty perfectly!

Bosco is not your typical cat, in fact I’m convinced he thinks he’s a person! He’s independent but likes to be around at the same time, he will only drink water from a freshly poured glass, he hates beef and loves human tuna, balsamic vinegar, toast with vegemite (a weird Australian yeast spread – sounds gross but is yummy!), icecream and butter (sparingly of course). He gets excited when neighbourhood cats come to visit but only plays with our second cat every now and then and prefers to pretend he doesn’t exist, and he rarely meows and purrs almost like a whisper. But with all his quirky traits he really is the perfect cat. He is beautiful. And I love him!

For more on Bosco and my other darling Oliver, feel free to stop by thepurrdiaries.blogspot.com some time.

friday’s featured feline: bombay
This week’s featured feline is Bombay. We’re gonna give Jeannie the floor to tell us all about her special blue-eyed boy!

I adopted Bombay from the Cat Care Society shelter in Lakewood, Colorado 4 years ago, about 6 months after we lost a cat that was 19 and had diabetes for 3 1/2 years.

When I saw him, it was love at first sight! His big blue eyes got me right away! He got his name Bombay because his eyes are so blue, they look like the Bombay Sapphire, so it is fitting.

Bombay is 4 now, a lynx point Siamese and the most special cat in more ways than one. He has a rare condition where he has suffered bone loss and all cartilage in his legs. Besides being on several meds and supplements everyday, he gets acupuncture and laser treatments once per week. These have helped him keep his mobility and get around; he can’t run and jump like other cats, but he can get in his favorite spots and gets around much better than before he started. It has worked wonders for him!

Bombay has beds all around the house (he also gets breakfast in bed every morning since he can’t run around too much). He loves to nap in the sunshine and loves to go outside on the weekends with us and roll in the dirt and enjoy the fresh air. He loves Science Diet canned food, and playing with his catch-me-if-you-can toy and his feathers-on-the-stick toys.

friday’s featured feline: lucy
This week Shauna is going to introduce us to her pretty kitty Lucy. Just look at those lovely blue eyes!
Where/how/when did you get your cat?
Shortly after my husband and I moved out together I decided we needed a kitty companion in our lives – so enters Lucy. For the few days prior I had been scouring the Internet looking for a Siamese cat to save and came across her kitten self on a classified ad. Turns out the owners lived on a farm in the middle of nowhere so we made the few hour trek to pick up the newest member of our little family. Upon arrival we discovered that Lucy had a pretty bad case of pink eye which her current owner had been putting Neosporin on (in her poor little kitten eyes?!?!!). At one point she decided to show us the father of the litter of kittens and called out in the backyard to have literally 50 cats come running to the deck. Needless to say we were gonna get this kitten out of that place! When we finally escaped to the car she sat on the floor and looked up at me with her big blue eyes, climbed up on my lap, slept soundly on my lap the entire car ride home and I have been her mama ever since.
What’s the inspiration behind Lucy’s name?
Lucille 2 is her official name coined from the most awesome show in the history of television. But also because my grandma and I loved cats and she had a Siamese stuffed animal named Lucille after her health no longer allowed her to keep cats of her own. We call her Lucy most of the time for short but she is also occasionally known as Lu cats, Lucini, furball, bean sprout and mewacin among other silly nicknames.
How old is Lucy?
5 years now – time flies!
What breed of cat is she?
Officially she is a Silver Point Siamese but we refer to her as a Siam-Tabs.
What are her habits, likes, dislikes…?
Her Siamese self loves to meow and tell you all about the events of her day. She hearts morning bird watching and any activity involving sunshine. She is not so fond of car rides and any flavor of cat food that is not tuna.
What about favorite toys, foods, places to sleep, hobbies…?
Her most favorite toys in the entire world are mylar balls and plastic bags. She will go to great lengths to sleep on her mama’s lap. And enjoys fiercing lazer pointers and lights that appear on walls from shiny objects such as watches.

friday’s featured feline: fosse
Tamandra Michaels is a pet photographer and wants to share the story of her newest furry addition to the houseland, Fosse. Learn all about this little cutie, and enjoy some of Tamandra’s amazing photos!

This is Fosse the Magnificat. He’s named after the late great dancer-choreographer, known for having dancers wear white gloves. He’s about 10 months old, and came to live with my four-footed family the first week of the New Year. I adopted him from a very crowded shelter at 8 weeks old. A shelter volunteer showed me him with his two siblings, all very freaked out and not social at all. She warned me that he would likely forever be shy, and not able to be socialized. I didn’t listen…

The little fuzzball came home to my existing 3 year old cat, Bono, and 10 year old German Shepherd, Borias. After a pretty brief period of adjustment, he was soon ruling the roost. It was soon evident that he was one wickedly smart, enormously active kitty! Loved tearing from room to room, tail fuzzed out, and making a “mer-r-r-r-rrrrrr!” sound through his nose. I swear I didn’t sleep through the night for many nights—he was into everything! His second week with me, he gave me a horrible scare, when I awoke to find him completely listless, with large eye flaps. I rushed him to the vet, where they said he had a 103 degree fever! They couldn’t ascertain what caused it, saying it was a “fever of unknown origin,” gave some antibiotics, and sent us home. He looked like he might not make it… but then by evening, he made a very sudden recovery, and by the middle of the night, he was his old self again, tearing around like a little hoodlum! Whew!

We have a very strong bond already, he’s very attentive to everything I do, loves to be with me. One favorite thing to do is ride on my lap as I wheel my wheelchair around the house, as he looks around in wonder. He’s a ninja fly and cricket hunter, no bug is safe from his clutches. (I also can’t wiggle under the covers, without suffering a giant pounce and attack!) He carries toy “prey” from room to room. In between naps in the sun. He also eats enough for two kittens, and twice as fast!

I love to follow him around with my camera (I’m a professional pet photographer), because he’s the most expressive cat ever. And obviously very darn cute! I’m very grateful we found each other, and to be sharing life with this special cat.

friday’s featured feline: gumpo
Hello there, feline-loving friends! First off, I want to apologize for the lack of posts lately. We’ve both been pretty busy lately, but things are slowing down for me (Pixelcat) so hopefully I’ll be able to start posting regularly again.
Now, without further ado, Wes is going to introduce you to Gumpo (pronounced GOOM-PO), his extremely human-like and clever cat!

Gumpo is a 5 year old boy cat. We got him from the local SPCA when he was about 8 months old.
Gumpo is unusually smart. He likes to figure out how things work by watching my wife and I. He has figured out how to open doors, use the toilets, get water from taps, tap the buttons on the microwave and TV remote control, turn off and on light switches, opening the dishwasher (not sure why he likes to do this), etc.
He also has an interesting speaking vocabulary – he can speak the following words in the right situation: “Hello”, “Bye-Bye”,”cookie”, “morning”, “gohan” (Japanese for dinner), “Mizu” (Japanese for water). He understands about 40 words. He has also picked up my wife’s whining sound/ intonation when he is in disagreement.
We’ve also taught him how to play soccer – which is cute.
Every morning, we give him cat treats. He jumps and tries to catch these in his two paws. When he succeeds, he takes the cookie from his paw and directs it towards his mouth.
We also have a hunting game that we play with each other – either he hunts me or I hunt him around the house. . . .
Gumpo spends a lot of time watching what my wife and I do. A few months after we got him, he tried walking on 2 feet for about a month – but eventually gave up.
As you can see, Gumpo is great in front of the camera.

This picture is from a couple of years ago. We took him to see Santa at the mall. The expression on his face was soooo cute.

This photo is from a professional session for office photos with a photographer. Gumpo has a tie on and looks a bit punk rock.

This photo was taken about a year ago by myself. Gumpo just decided to sit under my wife’s umbrella for a moment. Turned out to be a cute photo-op.

This photo is a close up that my wife took when Gumpo was in a really happy mood one day earlier this year. Yes, my cat smiles.

This is from Halloween 2 years ago. Gumpo always dresses up for Halloween. Gumpo and I always meet kids that come trick or treating to our door. Gumpo has become a bit famous for this among the kids in our neighborhood. The year of this photo, he just had a sweater on. But we have had him dressed up as a pirate, cowboy, and clown. I love this photo as it shows some of Gumpo’s attitude and confidence.
