hellcat’s collection of kitty confections.

Yo, MCL-ers! It has truly been forever since I’ve been able to do a quality post. Unfortunately I’ve been faced with some major difficulties in my personal life, and I am now a full time cake decorator, so this leaves me less time to dedicate to the cats of the internet.

As our Facebook Followers know, I often post the many kitty cakes that I make at work for everyone to see. I started cake decorating in August of 2011, and I’ve spent lots of time learning new techniques and trying out different designs–pretty much whatever comes to my head! I’ve mostly posted my cakes to facebook because I can do so from my phone on a break at work, but Pix and I decided that a blog post of my kitty confections would be a fun entry! I’ll also explain a little about how they came to be and my inspirations. Each photo will link to my Flickr page where you can view larger, more detailed versions. Some of the earlier photos are lacking on the quality side as my old phone wasn’t so great for photos, so I apologize!

So, without further ado, I’d like to share my favorite works involving cats!

kitty cake!
This cake is the first cat cake I ever did on September 10, 2011–my sister’s birthday! Dr. Kitty Purrington, our family cat, is mostly my sister’s… so I just had to put him on a cake. I used this photo of him as a reference:

Super cute! I keep my reference photo on the wall by my station at work :3

fuzzy white kitty cake.

I did this fuzzy white kitty as a petite cake one night for backup to put out in the case to sell. However, a customer came up and saw him and bought him immediately!

You may want to click the image above for a larger version to get more of the details in this cat garden. This was a part of my mother’s 50th birthday cake. I piped a colorful flower garden with one of each of our cats (DKP, Clementine, and Pickles the Drummer) peeking through the flowers.

have yourself a meowy little christmas.

“Have yourself a meowy little Christmas!” This was just a fun cake to put out in the case for Christmas. I hope the person who bought it have a meowy little Christmas indeed!

Working at a grocery store bakery, we have to have a lot of cupcakes in stock at all times. Usually, we just put rainbow sprinkles on the cupcakes to be sure to get them finished in a timely manner. One time, since I was on my last six-count for the day, I decided to quickly make my cupcakes into kittens–I couldn’t resist!

nyanko as a strawberry.

This Nyanko-style kitten dressed as a strawberry that I made just for Pixelcat is one of my favorite cakes. The kitten and strawberry are all completely sculpted from buttercreme icing! It also inspired many other Nyanko-style mini cakes:

The Nyanko-style kitten dressed as a cupcake is definitely one of my absolute favorites. I made one design of it that I wasn’t too happy with, and re-did it with much better results!

kitten in a coffee cup.

For cat lovers and coffee lovers alike, a kitten taking a swim in a coffee cup is to die for!

pink 2-cupcake kitty.

And my last and most recent kitty cake! Many grocery store bakeries do “Cupcake Critters,” but unfortunately I’ve noticed that many of them do not quite resemble the critters they intend. My goal with this fluffy pink kitty was not only to make sure it was a recognizable cat, but that it was an extra-cute one! I will secretly admit that I wanted to buy this kitty for myself, but someone else got to it within a few hours of me setting him out for sale! Haha!

I hope you enjoyed a peek at my cat cakes as much as I enjoyed thinking them up and creating them. I occasionally post them to my personal Tumblr–but just a warning, it’s my personal blog and the language and reblogs are sometimes NSFW, heehee. What else do you expect from a cat-loving, metalhead, rockstar cake decorator?

maneki neko monday: another delicious beckoning cake!

Here at MCL, Pixelcat and I just love kitty cakes. We’ve featured Maneki Neko treats in the past, and as an amateur cake decorator myself, I couldn’t resist sharing this one, too!

Chris over at Adventures in Cake Decorating won First Place in the Adult Beginner Sculpted Cakes division at That Takes the Cake in 2010 for her adorable Maneki Neko cake!

Her post is very detailed about her process, I think I can learn a thing or two from her! I leave you with Chris’s own final words from her Maneki Neko post:

If you see a cat beckon to you, follow him!

I love these silly sketches of food kitties!

spacesick - Cat Food sketch

I don’t know what it is, but food kitties never fail to delight me. Well, actually, it’s probably because I really like cats and I really like food.

“bountiful catch” – the cat tee and the cake it inspired!

So, this is one of the most awesome things EVER! Check out this Threadless tee designed by William Chua called “Bountiful Catch.” It’s a Samurai kitty and some goldfish! Very cool design!

Gotta love it, right? Well, prepare to be completely stunned by this masterful cake inspired by Bountiful Catch, baked and decorated by Samantha Friday:

I’m sure that we will feature many more cat-themed Threadcakes based off of Threadless tees!
